As a family photographer based in Orange County California, I know that summer brings the kind of moments that become treasured memories. Finding fun activities to keep the kiddos busy is key during the long days of summer. Whether you’re planning big adventures or just looking for simple ways to enjoy the season, these local activities are perfect for families.
1. Beach Adventures – Perfect for Play and Fun in the Sun
Spending time at the beach is a must during an Orange County summer. Local favorites like Crystal Cove and Heisler Park in Laguna Beach offer wide-open spaces for kids to play, explore tide pools, and build sandcastles, all while parents take in the beautiful coastal scenery. Both spots also feature scenic trails to enjoy before or after beach time.
Quick Tip: Beaches can get quite busy in the summer—especially on weekends. Arrive early to find a good parking spot. Crystal Cove has a daily $15 parking fee. Another tip is to check each city’s live cam beforehand, as the weather can often be different along the coast.
Bonus:Heisler Park in Laguna is walking distance from great coffee shops, like Jediidah Coffee and family-friendly restaurants, just steps away and perfect for a post-beach treat.
2. Don’t Miss the OC Fair – July 18 to August 17, 2025
TheOrange County Fairis a summer tradition filled with fun for the whole family. From thrilling rides and petting zoos to live entertainment and deep-fried everything, it’s an exciting outing that kids won’t forget.
Location: OC Fair & Event Center, Costa Mesa Dates: July 18 – August 17, 2025 (open Wednesdays–Sundays)
For families with younger kids, go early in the day to avoid the bigger crowds and take advantage of the kid-friendly activities and exhibits.
3. Splash Pads & Water Parks
When it’s hot, splash pads are the ultimate kid-pleaser. Check out these popular spots:
A resort-style public facility featuring a 25-meter lap pool, recreation pool, splash pad, and toddler wading pool. Open to both residents and non-residents, offering swim lessons, seasonal events, and a snack bar.
Bring water toys, snacks, and a change of clothes.
4. Go for Nature Walks or Easy Hikes
Not every summer outing needs to be a full-blown adventure. Orange County is home to beautiful, family-friendly trails perfect for little legs and big imaginations. Start early to avoid the heat!
Thomas Rileys Wilderness Park (Coto De Caza)
Laguna Coast Wilderness Park (Laguna Beach)
Casper’s Wilderness Park (San Juan Capistrano)
5. Explore the Charm of Balboa Island
Balboa Island in Newport Beach is one of my personal favorites and is a perfect destination for a fun day with kids. Ride the historic ferry across the harbor, walk the waterfront boardwalk, browse cute boutiques, and of course—grab a frozen banana or Balboa Bar (a must-try treat).
Kids will love:
Watching boats and paddle boarders
Riding the Balboa Island Ferry
Stopping at the Fun Zone across the harbor and visiting the candy store, of course!
6. Family-Friendly Festivals & Outdoor Concerts
Summer in Orange County is full of free community events and family fun. Don’t miss:
Sawdust Art Festival (Laguna Beach) – Ideal for older kids who love art and music
Concerts in the Park – Held in cities like Irvine, Mission Viejo, and Aliso Viejo
Dana Point Summer Concert Series – Live music with ocean views
Pack a picnic blanket and enjoy an evening of music and community under the stars.
7. Visit River Street Ranch and Petting Zoo
Located in San Juan Capistrano, River Street Ranch offers an adorable, family-friendly experience where kids can meet and feed farm animals, go on pony rides, and enjoy a slower pace of summer fun. There’s also plenty of kid friendly restaurants and places to get a sweet treat during your visit.
Highlights:
Pet goats, chickens, rabbits, and more
Pony rides and hands-on animal encounters
It’s right next to the historic downtown San Juan Capistrano
Watch the train that passes right through the district. The little ones love this!
