Including Your Dog in Newborn Photos

December 26, 2023

Because they were your first baby, too.

Welcoming a new baby is a big transition—for everyone in the family, including your dog. As a newborn photographer who spends time in real homes across Orange County, I love capturing the honest, quiet moments that unfold in those early days. And for many families, that means including the family dog in your newborn photo session.

Whether your pup is curious, protective, or just a little unsure about all the changes, they’re part of the story—and they absolutely deserve a spot in your family photos.

Why Include Your Dog in Your Newborn Session?

  • They’re Part of the Family: For so many of us, our dogs were our “first babies.” Including them in newborn photos honors that bond and captures the early connection between pup and baby.
  • Natural Moments at Home: At-home sessions make it easy and relaxed to include your dog. They’re in their own space, which means we can capture them comfortably interacting with your new little one—or just lounging nearby.
  • Real Life, As It Is: Life with a newborn and a dog can be chaotic, sweet, and funny. I love photographing those in-between moments: your dog peeking into the crib, sniffing baby’s toes, or curling up at your feet while you feed or rock your little one.

How to Prepare Your Dog for the Session

You don’t need your dog to be perfectly behaved. But having a dog that is friendly and can sit and stay on command is helpful.

  • Give Them Exercise First: A good walk before the session helps get out extra energy.
  • Keep Treats on Hand: A few small bribes can help encourage your pup to stay near or look toward the camera.
  • Don’t Stress: I work with dogs all the time. My style is relaxed and guided by whatever’s happening naturally—no pressure, no perfect poses required.

What These Photos Can Look Like

Some families want just a few sweet shots of baby and pup. Others want their dog in the mix for most of the session. There’s no right or wrong way. We’ll read the room (and your dog’s mood) and work with whatever feels right that day.

You might end up with:

  • A soft, quiet photo of your dog curled up near your swaddled baby
  • Candid moments of your pup watching over you during a feeding
  • Family portraits on the bed or couch with everyone together

Final Thoughts

Including your dog in your newborn photos adds a layer of connection and meaning. These photos aren’t just about what your baby looked like—they’re about what life felt like in those early days. And for a lot of families, your dog was right there for it all.
