As a Laguna Beach family photographer, I love capturing the natural joy and energy that little ones bring to a session. Here are some tips to help make your beach photoshoot smooth and stress-free.
Tips for your Family Photos with your toddler
1. Pick the Best Time for Your Toddler
Lighting is everything in photography, and golden hour (the hour before sunset) provides the most beautiful glow. However, if your toddler is happiest earlier in the day, I suggest a sunrise or very early morning session. Prioritizing their schedule ensures we capture happy, playful moments rather than overtired meltdowns. Lighting is very important with getting quality photos but if you plan to schedule in the fall or early spring, sunset is still fairly early.
2. Dress Comfortably keeping this stylish
Outfits can make a big difference in how your photos feel! Choose soft, neutral tones or light pastels that complement the beach setting. Flowy dresses for moms, comfortable neutral tees or casual button-ups for dads, and simple knit or cotton outfits for the little ones, like rompers or sun dresses work beautifully. Make sure your toddler’s outfit is cozy and allows them to move freely—nothing itchy or too formal! Barefoot is always a great option for beach sessions.
4. Let Them Explore and Play
Rather than expecting a toddler to sit still and smile on command, I encourage a more natural approach. Let them run in the sand, splash at the water’s edge, or collect seashells—these candid moments often make for the most heartwarming photos. I’ll guide the session in a way that allows for playful interactions while capturing beautiful, genuine moments. Keeping this happy and light hearted always helps.
