Fun Spring Break Ideas in Orange County Ca. with Kids

March 22, 2025

As a Orange County family photographer I get asked quite often for some fun spring break recommendations, especially from clients vacationing or visiting the area. Spring break is the perfect time to enjoy Southern California and make unforgettable memories with your little ones. Whether you’re looking for outdoor fun, hands-on activities, or relaxing family time, Orange County has something for everyone! Here are some of my personal favorite fun and family-friendly ways to spend spring break with your kids.

1. Explore the Tide Pools at Crystal Cove State Park

Crystal Cove’s tide pools in Newport Beach are a magical place for kids to discover marine life up close. Bring a bucket and let them explore sea anemones, hermit crabs, and starfish while enjoying the fresh ocean air. It’s a great way to mix fun with a little outdoor education and a beautiful view. There are a few different entrances in Crystal Cove but I love Reef Point and Pelican Point for tide pooling.

2. Have a Beach Picnic in Heisler Park, Laguna Beach

Pack a picnic and head to one of Orange County’s beautiful beaches. Heisler Park in Laguna Beach is one of my favorites! It feels like you’re in a tropical dream! Big Palm trees, grassy lawns and areas for the kids to run and play. take a walk along the stunning paths lined with succulents and beautiful flowers, or just enjoy the sunshine at the beach. There’s also great restaurants and coffee shops within walking distance. Keep in mind the weekends in the warmer months get really busy quickly! I suggest arriving early for parking here. There is metered parking spots along the side streets.

3. Visit the Santa Ana Zoo

This is a personal favorite of mine and my kids. The Santa Ana Zoo is a must-visit. It’s smaller and more manageable than larger zoos, making it perfect for little ones. Plus, they’ll love seeing monkeys, exotic birds, and even our favorite, a fun train ride around the park!

4. Go on a Whale-Watching Adventure

Spring is peak season for whale watching in Orange County! Take a family-friendly cruise from Dana Point or Newport Beach and catch a glimpse of migrating gray whales, dolphins, and sea lions. It’s an exciting and memorable way to experience nature.

5. Discover Hands-On Fun at Pretend City

If you’re looking for an indoor adventure, Pretend City in Irvine is perfect for little explorers. This interactive museum lets kids role-play in a mini city with a grocery store, fire station, and even a doctor’s office. It’s educational and fun all in one!

6. Ride the Balboa Fun Zone Ferris Wheel

Take a trip to Balboa Peninsula and ride the classic Ferris wheel at the Balboa Fun Zone. Afterward, grab a ice cream treat, head to the candy store, rent bikes, or take the ferry over to Balboa Island for some fun. So many cute shops and restaurants to explore!

7. Zoomars at River Street Ranch, San Juan Capistrano

Located in the heart of San Juan Capistrano’s historic Los Rios District, Zoomars at River Street Ranch offers a delightful experience for families with young children. This adorable petting zoo features a variety of friendly farm animals, including guinea pigs, sheep, pigs, a llama, an alpaca, and even an emu. Kids can enjoy hands-on activities like feeding the animals, mining for gems, and riding a kiddie train or electric mini tractors. The Western-themed playground, complete with slides and climbing features, provides additional fun for little ones.

Hours: Open daily from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM (last entry at 3:30 PM)
