1. Beach Adventures – Perfect for Play and Fun in the Sun

Spending time at the beach is a must during an Orange County summer. Local favorites like Crystal Cove and Heisler Park in Laguna Beach offer wide-open spaces for kids to play, explore tide pools, and build sandcastles, all while parents take in the beautiful coastal scenery. Both spots also feature scenic trails to enjoy before or after beach time.

Quick Tip: Beaches can get quite busy in the summer—especially on weekends. Arrive early to find a good parking spot. Crystal Cove has a daily $15 parking fee. Another tip is to check each city’s live cam beforehand, as the weather can often be different along the coast.

Bonus: Heisler Park in Laguna is walking distance from great coffee shops, like Jediidah Coffee and family-friendly restaurants, just steps away and perfect for a post-beach treat.

2. Don’t Miss the OC Fair – July 18 to August 17, 2025

The Orange County Fair is a summer tradition filled with fun for the whole family. From thrilling rides and petting zoos to live entertainment and deep-fried everything, it’s an exciting activity that kids won’t forget.

Location: OC Fair & Event Center, Costa Mesa
Dates: July 18 – August 17, 2025 (open Wednesdays–Sundays)

For families with younger kids, go early in the day to avoid the bigger crowds and take advantage of the kid-friendly activities and exhibits.

3. Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort: A Summer Paradise

Nestled along the scenic Back Bay of Newport Beach, Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort is a haven for water enthusiasts and families alike.

Inflatable Water Park & Water Sports

Kick off your summer at the Inflatable Aquatic Park, reopening on May 23, 2025, just in time for Memorial Day weekend. This floating playground offers slides, trampolines, and climbing structures, ensuring hours of fun for all ages.

For those seeking more adventure, the resort provides a variety of watercraft rentals, including stand-up paddleboards, kayaks, pedal boats, and 21-foot electric Duffy boats. Explore the tranquil waters of the Back Bay and create lasting memories.

Beachfront Relaxation & Entertainment

Relax on the waveless beach, perfect for families with young children. Rent a beach cabana and enjoy the sun while savoring snacks and drinks from Moe B’s Munchies. As the sun sets, the “Tunes at the Dunes” live entertainment series offers beachfront concerts, adding a musical touch to your evenings.

5. Santa Ana Zoo: Wildlife Adventures Await

Located in the heart of Orange County, the Santa Ana Zoo is a great destination for younger children, due to its smaller size and it was our favorite zoo in the area.

Exciting Summer Events

  • Brew at the Zoo (May 10, 2025): An exclusive 21+ evening featuring craft beer tastings, live music, and up-close animal encounters. It’s a unique way to experience the zoo after hours.

Daily Attractions

Open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the zoo offers a variety of attractions, including:

  • A diverse collection of animals, from monkeys to exotic birds.
  • Botanical gardens showcasing native plant species.
  • Family-friendly rides and play areas, open on weekends.

Additionally, Santa Ana residents enjoy free admission on the third Sunday of every month, making it an accessible outing for local families.

6. Explore the Charm of Balboa Island

Balboa Island in Newport Beach is one of my personal favorites and is a perfect destination for a fun day with kids. Ride the historic ferry across the harbor, walk the waterfront boardwalk, browse cute boutiques, and of course—grab a frozen banana or Balboa Bar (a must-try treat).

Kids will love:

  • Watching boats and paddle boarders
  • Riding the Balboa Island Ferry
  • Stopping at the Fun Zone across the harbor and visiting the candy store, of course!
