When I look back at my first pregnancy, I never really thought about doing maternity photos, period. Back in 2005, most of the maternity sessions you would see were over the top — extravagant, huge dresses blowing in the wind, and to be honest, that just wasn’t me. It felt a little staged, a little forced, and just so odd.
Now, as a Orange County maternity photographer I look back and truly wish I had found a way to capture that time. Pregnancy is such a unique season and the little moments matter more than we realize. You don’t need elaborate gowns or crazy dramatic setups to create something meaningful.
Over the years, I’ve learned that timeless, natural maternity photos are about connection, comfort, and capturing the real feeling of this season. From choosing a photographer who aligns with your style, to picking soft, flattering colors and the right time to schedule your session, there are a few things that can make all the difference.
Here are my 10 essential tips to help you create stunning maternity images you’ll truly love for years to come.

1. Choose a Photographer Whose Work Speaks to You
Spend time really looking through a photographer’s full galleries on their website and not just their IG highlights. Notice how their images make you feel.
Every photographer has a different style — some are bold and editorial, others are soft, lifestyle-focused, and perfect for timeless maternity photos. The best choice is the one that feels like you. When you love your photographer’s work, you’ll feel more relaxed and confident going into your maternity session.
2. Make Sure They Have Experience with Maternity Photography
Maternity sessions are different from other types of photography. Your photographer should know how to pose you comfortably, flatter your bump, and guide you without anything feeling forced.
An experienced maternity photographer helps you feel at ease and ensures your maternity photos look natural, connected, and effortless.
3. Pick a Location That Feels Meaningful to You
Your location helps tell your story. Some of my favorite Orange County beach locations for maternity photos are in Laguna Beach and Newborn Beach when shooting along the coast. I have several different preferred locations around the area, depending on the look and feel you’re going for. Whether it’s in your home, a wilderness park or the beach I’m happy to guide you through the process.
The best location is the one that reflects your personality and makes you feel at ease for your images.
4. Choose Soft, Timeless Colors and Wardrobe
Neutral, soft tones photograph beautifully and never go out of style. I recommend:
- Creams, beiges, soft browns, textures
- Blush, taupe, sage, dusty blue, light florals
- Avoid bright patterns, logos, or neon or overly dark colors
Softer tones allow the focus to stay on your connection and ensure your soft maternity photos feel calm, natural, and timeless. Another tip is to mix up a few different tones so everyone isn’t wearing the same color.

5. Wear Pieces That Feel Good on Your Body
Flowy natural dresses, soft fabrics, linen pants and even jeans and a top that shows off the belly. When you feel comfortable, it shows in every photo.
The goal is to feel like yourself — just a little more polished and glowy for your Orange County maternity photos, creating timeless maternity images you’ll treasure.
6. Coordinate Instead of Matching
If your partner or children are joining, choose colors that complement each other instead of everyone wearing the same thing. Soft, cohesive palettes help your images look calm, natural, and connected.
This makes your maternity session photos feel effortless and natural.
7. Book Your Session at the Right Time
The ideal time for maternity photos is 30–34 weeks, when your bump is beautifully round and you’re still feeling comfortable.
It’s also important to book your session during your second trimester so your date is secured and you can plan without stress. Proper timing ensures your maternity session captures you at your best.

8. Consider Professional Hair & Makeup
Professional hair and makeup isn’t about looking “overdone” — it’s about feeling confident, relaxed, and a little extra glowy.
It helps you feel your best, makes getting ready stress-free, and ensures your maternity photos look polished and timeless.
9. Trust the Light and the Process
Light is everything in photography. I guide clients to the softest, most flattering natural light — whether that’s in your home, at the beach or outdoors. I prefer sunset hour for outdoor sessions and mornings for an in-home shoot. Because lighting is just better at these times.
You don’t need to worry about where to stand or how to pose — that’s my job. Your job is to relax and enjoy the moment, which is key for creating a gallery you love.
10. Slow Down and Be Present
Because the most beautiful images come from real, unplanned moments. Take a deep breath, connect with your partner or baby, and enjoy this special season.
You don’t need to “perform” — just be. That’s where the magic happens.
