Great ideas for your outdoor maternity session…
- Soft Neutral Tones: A mix of light colors like ivory, earthy browns, blush, lighter blues or soft gray create a timeless and elegant look.
- Earthy Accents: Incorporate subtle pops of earthy tones like muted blues, sage greens, or to add texture with fabrics to ass depth and warmth to your outfit.
- Minimal Patterns: Stick to solid softer colors or soft, subtle patterns to keep the focus on you and your growing baby.
- Layers and Textures: Adding a cozy knit cardigan, or textured fabrics is always a great idea.
- Comfortable and Coordinated: Ensure your outfit is comfortable and complements your partner’s or family’s attire for a cohesive look.
- Think about the tones in your backdrop: Where it’s a garden, beach, warm yellow field, think about what tones might look best against that backdrop. I’m always here for help!
Best Time for Maternity Photos
The ideal time for maternity photos is between 30 to 34 weeks of pregnancy. You’re still comfortable enough to move around with comfort. If expecting multiples, consider scheduling the shoot a bit earlier, around 26 to 30 weeks, to avoid discomfort in later stages.

One of my favorite maternity sessions I had this year was with Tara & Kevin at one of my favorite wilderness parks in South Orange County called Thomas Riley’s Park. Tara picked the most beautiful soft blue and white dress from my client wardrobe from Free People. Picking a palette of softer neutrals is always a great idea and looks fabulous on camera!
