Recently, I photographed one of my favorite natural lifestyle newborn sessions in a beautiful home in the OC area and it perfectly reminded me why I adore this style of photography—soft light, genuine emotion, and all the little details that tell your unique story. Making your at-home newborn session unique
I always welcome inspiration photos from clients, but I gently remind families that we may not be able to recreate the exact pose. Babies have their own little personalities and moods, and the light in your home is unique to you. Instead, I use those ideas as inspiration to create authentic, natural moments that truly reflect your family. Often, it’s the unplanned, in-between moments that become the most treasured photographs. Here are some of my favorite natural newborn pose ideas for your next lifestyle session.

1. Mom and Dad Snuggling and gazing at baby
A soft, intimate shot of both parents holding their sleeping newborn in a swaddle captures the tenderness and love of those first days together. Finding a spot next to a window offers some soft natural light pouring in, making a beautiful classic photo.
2. Dad Kissing Baby in Black and White
Black and white newborn photos have a timeless, emotional feel. A close-up of dad gently kissing his baby with soft window light in the background creates a striking, heartfelt image. These were shot on a 50mm at 1.8. I find that a lower apertures gives a beautiful softness to the image.
3. Mom Holding Baby Against Her Chest
There’s nothing more comforting for a newborn than being nestled against mom’s chest. This pose captures that deep sense of love and security while highlighting the connection between mother and child.
4. Mom and Dad Looking at Baby Together
A tender image of both parents gazing down at their newborn shows the joy, awe, and love that fills the room in those early days. Using a window and some natural light coming through, makes it more interesting.

One of my favorite moments is when mom gently holds her newborn close to her face and smiles. It’s such a natural expression of joy and connection, and when captured in soft natural light, it becomes a photograph full of warmth and love.
